The Trust

The Luxury of the Untouched

The Balsam Mountain Trust gives residents a front-row seat to the sights, sounds, and enriching experiences that the land and wildlife conservation offers.

Trust. It's in our nature.

The mission of Balsam Mountain Trust is to inspire people to be responsible stewards of the natural and cultural resources of the southern Blue Ridge Mountains. The Trust brings us up close and personal to the sights, sounds and enriching experiences that Balsam’s 3,200-acre preserve and wildlife conservation provide.

No other community offers its owners and the surrounding community such a life-enriching resource.

We seek to protect and preserve this rugged and beautiful place — a commitment to the land and local culture is our reason for being. The Trust is not separate from our Balsam community members — it is the embodiment of who we are. Our efforts are focused:

Social

In addition to our community members volunteering with local nonprofits, the Balsam Mountain Trust provides environmental education to 10 local elementary schools, leads bi-monthly continuing education sessions on cultural heritage, and more.

Environmental

Along with protecting 3,200 acres of the community in a conservation easement with forest stewardship, we also have robust environmental programming and amenities, including a Native Plant Program, Adopt-a-Trail Program, and water refill stations to reduce plastic waste. We promote using green building practices within the community.

Economic

Balsam is proud to provide support for socioeconomic development through sourcing local foods for our restaurant, working with area businesses, and hiring team members from the surrounding community.

Hey Neighbor

Our hills are literally alive with the sights and sounds of wildlife that flourish in a protected and preserved land. No day passes without sharing moments with our neighbors on Balsam Mountain.

The Nature Center

The Trust’s Nature Center serves as a portal into a world of discovery, a living collection of animal ambassadors, species inventories, research documents, and museum-quality displays of the artifacts collected and catalogued within the Preserve. Balsam owners happily work alongside Trust naturalists on a variety of immersive, educational programs.

The Nature Center is a favorite destination for children and grandchildren to marvel at nature’s many wonders, enjoy hands-on learning alongside our naturalists, and get an up-close glimpse of the unique wildlife at Balsam Mountain Preserve.

Winging it

Birds of Prey

From a tiny eastern screech owl to an iconic northern bald eagle, this one-of-a-kind program allows animal lovers young and old to experience, even on the arm, these remarkable species. There is no other program like this one in western North Carolina, earning the Trust special distinction as a place where non-releasable birds of prey are taken in, are cared for, and serve as wildlife ambassadors to local schools and civic groups.

Cultural Arts

As part of its mission to introduce the Preserve’s residents to a wide variety of lifelong learning opportunities, the Balsam Mountain Trust sponsors a nature and cultural arts program.

During weeklong visits, artists create works in their individual areas of interest. The week culminates with a presentation at the Nature Center, during which artists unveil the work they have completed over the course of their stay, along with other pieces from their collection.

The visiting artists give residents a window into what inspires them, inviting questions and comments from the audience. At the end of the presentation, the artists donate one of the newly created pieces to Balsam Mountain Preserve, some of which are on display in the Welcome Center.

Scientific Research

Because so much of the land at Balsam Mountain Preserve is actively managed by the Trust, and has been protected from future development, the community has essentially evolved into a living laboratory.

Research projects on the Preserve include botanical and zoological inventories, water quality monitoring, sustainable forest management, bird migration patterns, and reptile behavioral studies. Colleges and universities are invited to use the protected land on the Preserve as both an outdoor classroom for students and a canvas for field research. To date there have been over 35 scientific research projects conducted on the Preserve. Currently, the Smithsonian Institution is studying migratory and behavioral patterns of the wood thrush species.

As an owner, all this is inherently and vividly a part of your everyday life at the Preserve.

While nature is our guide…
We’ve given her a little help.

Balsam Mountain Trust employs three full-time naturalists to help manage resources, provide educational opportunities, conduct research, and more.

Meet the team
Naturalists
Executive Director

Michael Wall

Dr. Wall, a distinguished leader in his field of environmental conservation and education, has been at the San Diego (CA) Natural History Museum for more than 16 years and is currently Vice President of Science and Conservation. He joins the Trust as an accomplished executive leader, scientist, educator, committed conservationist, environmental steward, effective fundraiser, collaborator, and creative thinker. Describing his work ethic, Wall said, “My first and unending love is teaching about the wonders of nature. Even in my career as a scientist, I’ve always leaned more into science communication than research…to not just tell people about nature, but to give them gateways to experience it. In short, my mission is to deepen community involvement in the science and practice of conservation.”

Operations Coordinator & Naturalist

Rachael Hart              & Fern

Rachael is the administrator and assistant naturalist for the Trust. She graduated from Haywood Community College with a degree in Wildlife Management and certification in Forest Management Technology. She grew up with an immense passion for animals and the outdoors and was always barefoot and outside in the dirt, which holds true today. Haywood gave Rachael a comprehensive and hands-on education by providing ample opportunities to work with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and other organizations of the like. She also spent two years at Cape Fear Raptor Center where she volunteered her time rehabilitating and releasing birds of prey, as well as working with a local wildlife rehabber. Rachael continues to love anything wildlife-related and enjoys being hands-on to help our environment in any way she can.

AmeriCorps Member & External Outreach Coordinator

Emily Taylor

Emily graduated from The University of Iowa in 2019 with a BS in Evolutionary Biology and a BA in Environmental Sciences. She grew up in the suburbs but relished any opportunity to explore the wilds around her. She developed a passion for wildlife at a young age but turned it into a career during college when she volunteered -and eventually interned with- the local raptor center in Solon, Iowa. She has since combined her love for education and animal husbandry by working and volunteering at several zoos and nature centers, notably a great green macaw rescue and breeding center in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Before starting her AmeriCorps service, she was lead camp counselor at Austin Zoo in Texas for two seasons. Emily is serving with AmeriCorps, an eleven-month national service program with positions offered by community and non-profit organizations. CTNC manages an AmeriCorps program that has placed 18 members with conservation and environmental groups throughout North Carolina. The program’s goals are to connect thousands of people to the outdoors and to develop future leaders in conservation.
