Best Places To Leaf Peep Outside New England

According to a community representative, Balsam Mountain Preserve, a low-density, conservation-oriented private retreat set on 4,400 acres in the North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville, is the ideal home for taking in the magnificent fall foliage.

Surrounded by the Nantahala National Forest, the Pisgah National Forest and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Balsam Mountain Preserve was created as a community within a park- with each home tucked away within the natural landscape giving residents front-row views of the autumn colors that paint the Smoky Mountains each fall.

Seventy-five percent (3,400 acres) of the property has been placed in a permanent conservation easement, ensuring the preservation of its present park-like state in perpetuity. The untouched nature of the preserve allows for the vibrant colors of fall to truly overtake the community, making Balsam Mountain Preserve home to the best leaf peeping in the Southeast.
