Valued Neighbors - Waynesville and Sylva
Nearby Waynesville and Sylva are two warm and welcoming towns that will take you back to a simpler time. Founded in 1809, Waynesville has been a picturesque mountain retreat for over a century. Even before the arrival of the railroad, visitors flocked here for the cool, clean air and water, outstanding scenery and to escape the city's summer swelter. The quaint old buildings, brick sidewalks, galleries and old-time general store add to its small town charm. And Southern hospitality is evident in the range of lodging and restaurant choices available here. Waynesville may be a small town, but it's big on entertainment and culture. There's nightlife and music for every taste, with numerous music and theatre performances taking place throughout the year. Other family-friendly special events range from street dances to art festivals and gallery tours to the bi-weekly farmer's market. Our other neighbor, Sylva, dates from 1889 and is a celebration of Appalachian heritage. A true "Main Street" community, the downtown has many restaurants and shops along tree-lined thoroughfares surrounded by mountains. Recreational opportunities abound with the town's own pristine 1,100 acre park consisting of hiking trails, waterfalls and a 180 degree view from 5,000 feet. There's also a state-of-the-art playground designed by local children and built by the community.
This area is rich with opportunities to enjoy everything the mountains have to offer. With gem mines, museums, white water rafting, and the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, there's so much to do and see. Offering much in the way of history and atmosphere, as well as entertainment and services, Waynesville and Sylva are just two more reasons to fall in love with Balsam Mountain Preserve.
