Amenities - Hiking/Camping

It's not surprising that outdoor pursuits are a favorite pastime at Balsam Mountain Preserve. Hikers and walkers enjoy the 50 miles of trails, but so do bird watchers, plant collectors and families who simply want to savor the beauty of the mountains and forests around them. These trails connect to the nearby Nantahala National Forest, which offers even more untouched territory to enjoy and explore.

For many, there's no better way to enjoy the quiet majesty of Balsam Mountain than to spend a night - or two - sleeping under the stars. The Dark Ridge Creek campsite includes a pavilion, bunkhouse, 4 tent pads, hiking trails, hot showers and flush toilets. Additional remote log cabins with soaring views are available for families who want to experience an old fashioned camp, deep in the woods.
